Technological Development and Current Status of Diaper Frontal Tapes, Side Tapes, and Elastic Waistband Materials
Jul 10, 2026
The diaper closure system consists of three components: the frontal tape, side tapes, and the elastic waistband. Collectively, these account for approximately 15% of the total production cost and directly determine the product's fit, leakage prevention, and wearer comfort.
Frontal tape and side tape materials have undergone multiple rounds of technological iteration. Early designs utilized polypropylene film paired with laminate adhesive tape; however, the tape tended to collect debris and lose significant adhesiveness after repeated use, while also sticking uncomfortably to the skin—a design now limited to a few low-end products. Subsequent developments introduced polypropylene woven mesh tapes paired with mechanical fasteners (hook-and-loop); while these offered excellent peel and shear performance, they suffered from a heavy plastic feel and a stiff texture. Currently, non-woven frontal tapes are the most widely adopted due to their significant cost advantages, although their peel stability and overall performance fall short of soft, plush-style alternatives.
Mainstream mechanical fasteners in the current market include Y-shaped, S-cut, and elastic big ear composite designs; increased automation in production lines has further spurred the creation of diverse tape structures.
Elastic waistband materials have also seen continuous upgrades. Early foam materials, characterized by insufficient elasticity and poor recovery, have been largely phased out. Elastic films offer low tensile resistance and strong shape recovery, providing a softer, more comfortable fit. Today, spandex-based materials—balancing cost-effectiveness with tensile performance—have become the industry standard, with some products integrating elastic materials directly into the tape design to create distinctive "large-ear" elastic structures.
New material technology is the core driver of quality upgrades in diapers, enabling products to evolve toward greater user-friendliness. Softness and thinness are the industry's primary development trends, and diaper closure systems continue to innovate and improve in response to these two key demands.
